Saturday 2nd XI  - Won by 67 runs batting first at home to Sevenoaks Vine CC in the league.

BPCC 180 - 8 (50 overs) (G. Darroch 45, T. Gallop 50)
SVCC  113 all out (43.3 overs) (T. Gallop 3-15)

After over month without cricket, the second eleven began their league season with a confortable win against newly promoted Sevenoaks Vine. Following the horrendous weather of the past month, the wicket was remarkably hard and dry but it still came as no surprise to be asked to bat when visitors won the toss.  One of the new faces at Bickley, Raj Maru opened the innings with Simon Melaniphy, and they put on 22 runs before Simons aggression saw him try to hit over the top once too often, while Raj looked assured in his first league innings. Keyes and Darroch took the score to 70 before Sean was trapped infront and newcomer Simon Reynolds was also given out LBW, bringing to the crease Tom Gallop - Son of Bickley's first overseas Dave some years back! These two batted with patience and style waiting on the bad ball to punish, while constantly taking singles to ensure the first batting bonus point. When Gordon was finally bowled by Cowdrey, he was just 5 short of a 50 and the score a healthy 140 - 5. Alistair Owen-Browne - the final debutant of the side was unfortunately run out, but the young Aussie continued with support from Marcus Aimey to reach his maiden half century, and only lost his wicket in the dash for runs in the final few overs. Francis was the last to fall, off of the last scheduled ball of the innings, with the score on 180 exactly.

Matthew Johnson did as he has done so many times in the past, and opened up with a spell of naggingly accurate seam bowling, and while Francis took a few overs to get his eye back in behind the sticks, AOB soon had the ball following him - a trend that contined all afternoon, as he held on at mid on to provide Matty with his first scalp of the league season.  Jack started off up the hill, but tended to bowl a slightly too full a length, and so he withdrew himself from the attack, allowing Marcus to get an early crack at the top order.  The Vine batsmen loked to have recovered from the early blow at 38-1, but a collapse saw Matty J and Marcus tear the top order apart, leaving the Vine 5 down with only 51 on the board.  AOB came on for an over at the top end before drinks, and removed Steve Salisbury within 4 balls, and after a second burst from Jack, Tom Gallop was given a chance to seal a superb day by taking three wickets. Marcos, Jack and AOB rotated at the top end, and it was only a metter of time before the Vine tail succumbed, with Tom fittingly bowling the last man to claim 20 points and to get the season off to a perfect start.  View Scorecard

“The more I practice, the luckier I get”

Hopefully a few players will get the chance to prove or disprove this theory next week in the 4s. Unfortunately a very rusty fielding performance let us down on Saturday when we had a real chance of starting the season with a win. A number of players had to miss out on a game but taking a gander at the scorecard they may quite rightly wonder how. Well there were lots of mitigating factors and McQ was in a no-win situation after selection and with an embarrassment of riches, (theoretically) at his disposal on Friday afternoon.

Too many balls went through or past fielders and there were more than a couple of dropped catches that frustrated the bowlers, in particular Jason & Nev (3-27) who deserved better. This meant that we were set a target 50 – 75 runs outside our comfort zone.

It was not an easy wicket to bat on but required patience, luck or both. Dring & Frost established a half century platform but no one in the middle order (including the skipper) took up the baton. Still with a mix of nice shots & lusty blows from Tom Preston, Sleepy Miles B and Crocked Barton (sans runner) we stuttered to 144 ao without really committing ourselves, so 160-170 would have been a gettable target.

On the bright side we may have a team consisting of XI cricketers this season, be competitive in the league and develop some of the youngsters along the way.

Anyway welcome to 4XI fold Tom Preston & Brian Catell and welcome back the prodigal all-rounder Woody Sanderson. A shame he couldn’t repeat his debut performance (in 2004) on the same ground.

My thanks to the scorer (her chance to play will come) and to John Huntley for umpiring, taking one for the team (good shot Reza) although his attempts to keep the over rate up were not appreciated as they cost me & the team a run-out of their top scorer!

One more week without Mr Brewer so as VC the pressure is on to bring home the bacon next week or face his wrath! View scorecard
