Report

Back in the Premier Division where we belong, and first up came a trip to the sunshine of Sevenoaks Vine. It’s usually one of the more sedate venues on the circuit, but this time we were sharing the ground with 250 hockey players slowly getting drunk! Dan Magin took the first wicket, a smart catch by Warren Lee, before Xav took the next three, one of them courtesy of an acrobatic catch by Gordon. That catch sent back the Vine’s South African overseas player for 13, and he is a man with a first class hundred to his name. Xav bowled his ten overs straight through, an excellent spell of 3-27, and when Adeel took the fifth wicket we had the Vine reeling at 75 for 5 at the halfway stage.

In Division One, they’d probably have been 110 all out from there – but it’s all a bit different in the Premier and we must expect teams to bat all the way down just as we do. The Vine’s sixth pair put on 112, and we did well to restrict them to 70 from the last ten overs and a total of 207 for 7.

We didn’t make a great start and we were quickly 21 for 3, but Alex Darroch and Dan started the recovery. At half distance we were 75 for 5 just as the Vine had been, but just as they had, we had our best partnership for the sixth wicket thanks to Warren and Michael. Those two put on 94 in sixteen overs, before Michael was unfortunate to be run out for 40. Warren soon followed for 79, but still we came to the last over needing seven to win, with Gordon and Xav at the wicket.

First ball, four, surely we’re favourites now. Second ball, easy single, did we need to try for the second? But try we did, and Gordon didn’t quite get there. Of course you’d rather win when you have a game like that, but it was still a good close game to start the season and we’ll win the next one instead.
