The Bickley Park 3rd XI headed into their final game of the season in second place against top of the table OD CUACO requiring 9 points to secure promotion.

Sunny won the toss and chose to bowl on a track that looked decent – one of the first all year.  Leo Hadcock and Skipper sunny opened the bowling and the OD openers looked to have no intent of scoring any runs in the first 15 overs unless it was to deep point.

BPCC were quieter than usual with the nerves until Leo Hadcock made the first breakthrough as a perfect length delivery was caught behind by Marcus. The man apparently averaging 65 came and went without looking too dangerous as he was dismissed by Richard Horner. Simon was unlucky to have two of the most plumb lbw appeals turned down as the umpire ‘believed he got a bat on it’.

With OD around 120-4, Owen dismissed their opener with Chris Eaton taking the catch. Leo (3-37) claimed two more wickets before 40 overs and OD were restricted to 206 – an achievable total on this pitch.

Simon and Vishesh opened the batting and continued their aggressive start from last Sunday. Vishesh quickly picked up on anything short and dispatched it to the boundary, with the pair putting on a 40 run partnership. Simon was unluckily dismissed, caught mid off, after looking in good form the whole season. Vishesh soon followed after – caught off the opening bowler.

After a quick downpour, Samit and Owen continued – Samit looking in great form with some excellent shots on the off side. On the boundary all sorts of maths was going on, calculating we only needed 167 runs to secure promotion. Another aggressive innings from Owen was brought to an end by a great catch from the opposition. Samit (48) was bowled after a vital innings bringing us within touching distance of promotion.

Chris scored the promotion securing runs causing a big cheer from the boundary, leaving OD looking pretty confused on what it was about. Chris (20) was dismissed after a key innings so the batsman who followed were directed to ‘have a swing’ remembering the total to win the match was actually 207, not 167.

In the 37th over with 207 looking just out of reach the only thing the batsmen and fielders could hear was Chris Eaton playing Sweet Caroline out of a bluetooth speaker on the boundary. After coming up just short of the total, but the 167 and promotion secured, it was the end of the season for the BPCC 3rd XI.

It’s been a great season this year, ending in a well deserved promotion. A special thank you to Skipper Sunny and Vice Captain Simon who gave up a lot of time to organise a team each week.

Onto next season!
