A hugely disappointing result for the 2s against bottom of the table Sidcup, with the match over and done with around 5.30pm. As the (early) evening sun descended, the skipper read the riot act and called it our worst performance of the season by far.
To the match – PC won the toss and elected to bat, confident that our batsmen would be good enough to post a challenging total. Alas his faith in us proved unfounded as only 3 people hit double figures – Harry Stafford being the standout with a stoic knock of 51. Well played Harry! Parag (20) and Firthy (14) were the other 2 who can came remotely close to performing anywhere near their potential.
Fair play to the oppo as they did what they needed to do, aided and abetted by some excellent ground fielding and some tight bowling. Hats off in particular to Sidcup’s younger players, one of whom purveyed his slow right arm overs to considerable effect.
With our innings coming to an abrupt close, we took solace in a truly excellent tea full of flavour and variety.
Despite our paltry score, we resumed play full of hope and ambition to make the most of an uncertain track and take the points. Regrettably early crucial chances were not taken, which gave the home team all the confidence they needed to bat with freedom and secure the win they deserved on the day. Marcus bowled with great skill and accuracy and picked up the only 2 wickets to fall.
Thanks to Martin, Vicky, Red, Bill, Lisa, Duncan and Sam for making the journey to offer their support – sorry we couldn’t deliver the goods for you!
Huge thanks once again to Alex (Gariff) for standing in as umpire – your contribution is much appreciated buddy.
A bad day at the office and we look forward to putting things right next week
